Mobile communication companies, which suffered from an unprecedented hacking incident last year, have expanded their investment and manpower related to information protection. In particular, SK Telecom’s willingness to strengthen its security capabilities, which was the first to announce the leakage of personal information, was overwhelming.

According to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) information protection comprehensive portal on the 1st, mobile carriers (SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+) invested a total of 367.5 billion won in information protection last year. This is an increase of nearly 22% compared to the previous year (301.2 billion won).

SK Telecom has been the most active in investing in information protection. SK Telecom and SK Broadband’s investment amounted to 143.4 billion won, up 53.7% from the previous year (93.3 billion won). Unlike KT and LG Uplus, SK Telecom operates its wired business separately through SK Broadband, so it needs to be added up.

There were also 526 people in charge of information protection, up 61% from the previous year. SK Telecom has 401 people and SK Broadband has 125. Information protection personnel accounted for 3.4 percentage points (p) of SK Telecom’s total IT personnel from 6.0 percent to 9.4 percent.

KT has invested 127.5 billion won in information protection. It increased by about 2% compared to the previous year (125 billion won). This is 6.3% of the total investment in the IT sector. The number of people in charge of information protection was 317.1, up 9.3% from the previous year.

LG U+ invested 96.6 billion won in information protection infrastructure investment. It is 16.7% more than the previous year (82.8 billion won). This represents about 7% of the total investment in the IT sector. The number of personnel in charge of information protection was 351.3, an increase of 19.9% from the previous year.

In the telecommunications market, it is evaluated that mobile carriers are keeping their promise to strengthen security activities that they emphasized at the time of the hacking accident. Meanwhile, SK Telecom’s bold investment has also changed its ranking information protection investment. While Samsung Electronics took the top spot, SK Telecom overtook KT and Coupang to rise to second place.
