Trichy: Unidentified hackers gained access into the WhatsApp account of the wife of Srirangam temple’s chief priest Sundar Bhattar and sent messages to various people in her contact demanding money due to an emergency.Cybercrime police sources said the priest wife’s WhatsApp account was digitally cloned by an unidentified gang on Sunday. The hacker sent text messages to multiple people on the contact list seeking up to ₹60,000 to be transferred immediately. Within 30 minutes after hacking into the account, the chief priest also received the bogus message. Sundar Bhattar said a few of their friends fell for the misleading text and transferred a total of around ₹1 lakh to the bank account provided by the hacker.Based on a complaint from S Akilandeswari, 55, who transferred around ₹10,000 to the fraudulent account, police registered a case and are investigating.
