KUWAIT: The Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced Sunday the arrest of an international gang of African nationalities accused of launching cyberattacks targeting telecom towers and banks in Kuwait. In a statement issued by the General Department of Security Relations and Media, the MoI said the case began when the Communications Authority reported cyberattacks on communication networks. Security teams immediately initiated search and investigation operations.
Investigations revealed the attacks originated from advanced electronic devices used to infiltrate networks and send large volumes of fraudulent messages impersonating banks, with the aim of stealing account data and seizing funds. The suspicious signals were traced to a vehicle in Salmiya, where the driver attempted to flee, colliding with several vehicles before being apprehended after strong resistance.
A search of the vehicle uncovered sophisticated electronic equipment and technical tools. The suspect confessed to working with an accomplice to hack telecommunications networks and send fraudulent messages posing as banks and telecom companies. Follow-up operations led to the arrest of the second suspect, with a search of their residence uncovering additional devices and tools used to analyze stolen data. Both suspects and the seized items were referred to the competent authorities for legal action.
Separately, the Ministry of Interior, represented by the General Department of Residence Affairs Investigations, announced the arrest of 178 violators and wanted persons during an extensive security campaign covering all governorates. The operation, carried out by the Violators Follow-up and Inspection Departments, was implemented in line with the directives of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and uphold the rule of law. The campaign targeted densely populated areas to track down individuals violating residence and labor laws.
