The sight of a security guard stationed under nothing but an umbrella during a blistering heatwave has sparked anger and concern among Malaysians.
A netizen, Shahren Amizi, took to Facebook to challenge a security company’s decision to leave their employee sitting in the scorching sun with such minimal protection.
Highlighting the guard’s plight, he wrote:
“Just take a look at this mak cik; imagine if it were your mother or father being treated like that, how would you feel? Sitting in this scorching weather with no fan, only a market umbrella. In this day and age, we need to understand the reality of ‘modern slavery’.”
Accusations of exploitation
Shahren argued that the conditions were a clear example of systemic mistreatment.
“This is what happens when security companies practice modern slavery, exploiting workers for personal and commercial gain, conditions which workers cannot refuse due to threats or coercion,” he stated.
He further expressed his belief that the guard may have felt forced to endure these conditions simply to provide for her family.
Dignity beyond a salary
Shahren emphasised that a job should provide more than just a basic wage; it must also offer dignity and proper facilities. In this case, that means a designated space providing adequate shelter from the elements.
“Please show some kindness. Why mistreat people like this, even if you are paying her salary? Do not treat workers like animals,” he urged.
“She is tasked with guarding the bungalows of the wealthy, yet she is only given a market umbrella for protection.”

To conclude his post, Shahren pointed out an apparent disparity in how workers are treated.
He noted that many foreign security guards are provided with hostels, air-conditioned guardhouses, and meals in addition to their wages, questioning why local workers are not afforded the same basic comforts.
