Police will be paying close attention to drivers speeding in school zones, passing stopped school buses, texting while driving, and violating seat belt and child passenger safety laws.
The department is also using speed calming devices like flash warnings, so drivers know when they exceed the speed limit inside a school zone.
Officers said the transition might be a learning curve for new parents, so it’s important to leave the house early and be aware of nearby school zones.
The Mt. Juliet Public Works team will also be out helping reduce stress for parents, helping to maintain a smooth traffic flow along with Wilson County SROs, crossing guards and school staff.
MJPD Public Information Officer Justin Beasley said the department is looking forward to playing a role in children’s safety throughout the school year.
“In Mt. Juliet, you know we got a little more than 40,000 people,” Beasley said. “We still like to consider it a small town, so you’re gonna have the red carpet rolled out for ya as far as making sure that we’re catering to those schools over the next 3-4 school days.”
