Quick look: The long-running Safe Schools Conference is now the National School Safety Conference, reflecting its growing national reach. The three-day event will bring together educators and law enforcement to share strategies for safer, more supportive campuses.
A longtime Orange County event focused on protecting students and promoting stronger school communities is gaining national momentum — and with it, a new name.
Formerly known as the Safe Schools Conference, the National School Safety Conference is set to take place July 9 through July 11 at the Delta Hotels Anaheim Garden Grove, drawing more than 500 participants from over 20 states. The updated name reflects both the event’s expanded reach and its continued focus on research-informed strategies to create safer, more supportive campuses and communities.
Now in its 16th year, the conference was originally established to strengthen partnerships between education and law enforcement while showcasing practical approaches to student safety, wellness and improved school climates. It continues to be presented by Dave Long & Associates in collaboration with the Orange County Department of Education and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
“To see how this conference has evolved into a national platform is truly remarkable,” said Dave Long, former California secretary of education and founder of Dave Long & Associates. “The name change to the National School Safety Conference reflects the momentum we’re seeing — and the shared commitment from educators, law enforcement and community leaders across the country to keep our schools safe.”
Attendees will include school administrators, counselors, board members, school resource officers and community leaders. Breakout sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including behavioral threat assessment, cyberbullying prevention, gang intervention, crisis response, drug trends, mental health and responsible technology use.
Each day will also feature a general session bringing all participants together:
- Wednesday’s opening session, “Strategies for Safe Schools,” will explore proactive school safety strategies, restorative practices and the importance of building strong community ties to prevent violence and support student success.
- On Thursday, Carly Posey will deliver a keynote titled “Anticipating the Unthinkable,” sharing her family’s experience during the Sandy Hook tragedy and offering practical insights on preparation, reunification and recovery.

- Friday’s closing session, “Turning Challenges Into Triumphs,” will be co-facilitated by Orange County Superintendent Dr. Stefan Bean and Chief Deputy Jessica Johnson of the Orange County Probation Department. The panel will spotlight local youth who have overcome significant barriers — and who now serve as powerful reminders of what’s possible with the right support.
