NCSC warns UK critical infrastructure faces imminent AI ransomware threats | #ransomware | #cybercrime

Britain’s critical national infrastructure is likely to be hit by AI ransomware attacks in the next two years, the National Cyber Security Centre has warned. The stark warning has been issued now as experts warn the UK is at a critical “sliding doors moment” of national consequence as AI malware is being harnessed to orchestrate these attacks.
The low cost tech that organisations have relied upon to defend still exposes UK organisations to AI which can unravel their longstanding cyber security weaknesses. This calls for urgent investment in resilience, the top Chief says, to stop AI being used against the economy and society in a threatening way.
Whilst AI may not be inventing entirely new means of cyber assault, it supercharges hostile actors’ ability to scan for, identify, and exploit long-neglected software vulnerabilities at scale and speed. Decades of unaddressed gaps in security and legacy infrastructure create points of failure across supply chains and critical infrastructure, which fraudsters exploit perfectly.
Action will be taken through the introduction of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill and the soon-to-be National Cyber Action Plan to strengthen the UK’s defence security.
