BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Elementary students love to ride their bikes and walk to school. A group in the community donated neon safety vests to eighteen different Bismarck Public Schools to help keep children safe on their commutes to school. Before the first bell, Hudson Natwick and his friends hop on their bikes and ride to school. The children all live in the same neighborhood and meet up in the mornings to ride to Liberty Elementary. He says the best part isn’t the ride itself — it’s who he rides with. “Having fun with my friends and like getting to school the fun way just riding the bike,” said Natwick. The children also know there are risks to riding and walking to school in the dark — especially around traffic. “Just to help us to be safe in this whole neighborhood from cars and crashing into us,” said Natwick. Community member Jeff White saw that concern firsthand and wanted to keep students more visible. With support from Bravera and the Title Teams, he helped provide bright safety vests for kids. “Some community partners reach out and just say we have an idea to help you get your kids to school in a safe way and they gave us these amazing vests that kids love and they can wear and people can notice them,” said Liberty Elementary Principal Haley Haugen. Natwick and his friends say they like wearing their vests and staff notice a difference. “I think that they really feel a sense of pride and responsibility getting here to school. I think they get to visit with their friends. And yes, anytime we can get students out and active; walking, running, biking, we see them be able to pay attention and be a little more focused in the classroom as well,” said Haugen. Now, students can rack their bikes and head into school feeling safer and more ready to learn. The vests not only help protect students, but they also encourage them to stay active on their way to and from school Copyright 2026 KFYR. All rights reserved.
