Kathmandu. Following a sharp rise in ransomware attacks on information technology systems, the Government of Nepal has urged the public and various organizations to remain vigilant. The National Cyber Security Center, under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, has issued a special advisory calling for caution to prevent such cyberattacks and mitigate potential large-scale damage.
According to the notice issued by the center on Sunday, there has been an increasing trend of unauthorized access to digital devices and data for the purpose of extortion. Ransomware is a highly malicious type of software, or malware, that ‘locks’ or ‘encrypts’ important files and data on a user’s computer, mobile, or other digital devices.
Once files are locked, users lose access to their own data. Cybercriminals then demand large sums of money or ransom in exchange for restoring access to those files. The center has described this as a serious security challenge, warning that it could paralyze service delivery not only for individuals but also for large organizations.
Falling victim to such attacks carries a high risk of sensitive personal and institutional information being stolen or exposed. This leads to breaches of privacy, and the ransom paid to criminals to recover data can result in significant financial loss. The center maintains that since ransomware can render entire systems inoperable, prevention is the best course of action.
The government’s advisory warns citizens against opening unknown links, downloading files from suspicious emails, and urges them to keep the security systems of their digital devices updated at all times. The center has particularly emphasized that government and private offices must maintain regular backups of their data and adhere to minimum cybersecurity standards.
