CHAPARRAL, N.M. — Authorities in New Mexico arrested a convicted child sexual offender from Colorado who allegedly tried to escape to Mexico.
Otero County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jorge Campos at a gas station in Chaparral, near the border. A 911 caller tipped authorities to his location after a bulletin was issued about Campos.
According to authorities, Campos left before the en dof a trial where he faced child sexual assault charges. Authorities stated he left before jury deliberations and a guilty verdict.
Campos allegedly removed his ankle monitor and got rid of his cell phone. Authorities then issued a bulletin, alleging he was seen in Las Vegas, New Mexico. That led to the 911 call and arrest.
According to authorities, Campos allegedly evaded a traffic jail sentence in 2007. He was ordered to appear for a 30-day sentence but wasn’t apprehended on a warrant until a year and three months later.
