North Branch School News: Cybersecurity and school safety | Columns | #schoolsaftey #kids #parents #children

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a timely reminder of how important it is to protect our information and the technology systems we depend on every day. At North Branch Area Public Schools (NBAPS), technology supports nearly everything we do, from classroom instruction and communication to managing student records, maintaining building security, and keeping our schools operating efficiently.Cyberattacks have affected school districts across Minnesota, disrupting operations and creating significant challenges for students, staff, and families. Beyond exposing sensitive information, cyber threats can also affect essential building systems and result in costly recovery efforts. The cybersecurity challenges facing schools today are far more complex than they were a decade ago. Staying ahead of emerging threats is essential to cost-effective operations, safe schools, and quality learning environments. Our responsibility to protect information extends well beyond the students currently attending our schools. NBAPS maintains educational records, including transcripts, for generations of graduates. A cybersecurity incident could affect people who attended our schools decades ago, making the protection of these records an ongoing responsibility.Just this month, the Minnesota School Safety Center issued an urgent alert about newly discovered software vulnerabilities. Our technology team, led by Darin Marcussen, responded by taking additional precautions to protect district systems. I appreciate the expertise and dedication of our technology team as they monitor emerging threats, maintain security protections, and keep our systems operating.
Over the past decade, our focus has shifted from providing a device for every student to ensuring technology is used purposefully, in balance with other learning experiences, and with a strong emphasis on digital citizenship and online safety. Our media specialists and classroom teachers play an important role in helping students use technology responsibly, recognize online risks, and protect their personal information. These are important life skills that extend well beyond the classroom. Using strong passwords, thinking twice before clicking unfamiliar links, keeping devices updated, and being cautious about sharing personal information are steps that help protect us at home, at work, and at school.Technology will continue to change, and so will the challenges that come with it. Our commitment remains the same: protecting our students, caring for our schools, and using our resources wisely.SARA PAULis superintendent of North Branch Area Public Schools.
