NORWALK, CT — The Norwalk Board of Education has appointed Jonathan Kinne as the school preparedness and safety supervisor for Norwalk Public Schools.
According to a news release provided by the school district, Kinne joins the team with School Preparedness Officer Ryan Harold.
Kinne has served as the interim school preparedness and safety supervisor since May 2025. He previously served as the dean of students and safety coordinator at Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School from 2022 to 2025.
In his role at Jefferson, Kinne was responsible for building-wide safety coordination, working closely with the Norwalk Police Department and the school’s assigned school resource officer to plan and execute all emergency drills, according to the district.
He led the annual development and revision of the school’s safety and emergency operation plans, ensuring compliance and clarity through bilingual signage and documented procedures, according to the district.
Kinne also served on the District Reunification Team, supporting emergency preparedness on a broader scale. His extensive experience and passion for student safety make him a valuable addition to the district leadership team, according to NPS.
Norwalk Public Schools has protocols in place that ensure student safety is the district’s number one priority. This includes the creation of a standard resource guide for all schools, establishing a school safety team in each school and creating a year-long school safety activity schedule that includes drills and exercises, according to the district.
NPS works in partnership with the Norwalk fire and police departments to create an inclusive safety culture so that everyone can improve his or her level of readiness. A critical component in the plan is the classroom response to an incident at school, according to the district.
School staff plan and train for weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety. Everyone has a responsibility in a school emergency including students, teachers, staff and administration and parents/caregivers, according to NPS.
The district’s school safety program includes a standard response protocol based on five simple actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter. In the event of an emergency, the action and appropriate direction will be announced, according to NPS.
“Together, these efforts reflect Norwalk Public Schools’ commitment to creating safe, prepared and supportive learning environments for every student and staff member,” the release reads.
