NPCIL Rejects ‘Sensitive Data Breach’ Claims After Ransomware Targets Kudankulam Project Contractor | #ransomware | #cybercrime

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) on Wednesday (15 July) rejected claims of a “sensitive data breach” at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), after reports emerged that a ransomware group had obtained confidential files from a contractor’s server, The Hindu reported.

The corporation maintained that the leaked material relates only to “conventional balance of plant common service facilities”.

According to a statement by Prateek Agarwal, Executive Director, Corporate Communications, NPCIL, the engineering, procurement and construction contract for these common services was handed to Reliance Infrastructure Limited via an open tender.

The affected facilities, NPCIL said, are of “conventional nature” and are typically found in thermal power plants as well as other process industries. They are not related to nuclear safety or nuclear security systems.

The statement added that during tendering, NPCIL shared indicative drawings and specifications, after which Reliance Infrastructure prepared detailed engineering drawings in consultation with respective Original Equipment Manufacturers, later reviewed and cleared by NPCIL.

Reuters reported that more than 19,000 files dating from 2016 to mid-2025 were accessed by the ransomware outfit World Leaks.

The material reportedly covered engineering blueprints for control, cooling and ventilation systems, vendor lists, meeting records, joint Indian-Russian inspection reviews and insurance documents.

The breach is said to have originated from a server run by third-party provider Yotta, linked to Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group. The company acknowledged a “partial breach” but declined to specify what was taken.

Project insiders earlier described “absolute commotion” among senior officials who were “completely clueless” about the incident.

Suspicious activity was detected on 29 May and flagged in late June, with NPCIL and CERT now investigating.
