Gurugram, Jun 3 (PTI) Police have placed 58 villages in Haryana’s Nuh district under surveillance as part of a special drive against cybercrime and issued legal notices to village heads, warning them against harbouring cybercriminals, officials said.
The action on Tuesday comes after the police under “Operation Clean” identified the villages that are repeatedly linked to cases of online fraud, fake calls, digital arrest scams and OLX-related frauds, they said.
Under the operation, the police will intensify action against cybercriminals and dismantle their support networks, the officials said.
A senior police officer said the situation had prompted the administration to establish accountability at the village level, as the entire district’s image is being damaged and Nuh is now being known as a cybercrime hub.
Sarpanches of the identified villages have been served notices and warned that legal action can be initiated against them if they are found providing shelter or support to cybercriminals, the police said.
Most of the villages under surveillance fall in the Punhana, Bichor and Ferozpur Jhirka police station areas, they said.
According to the police, several arrests have been made in cyber fraud cases from these villages. However, complaints about local support extended to cybercriminals have also surfaced.
The police have also appealed to the public to socially boycott those involved in cybercrime and share information about them with authorities.
“For villages used as havens for cybercriminals, special campaigns will be launched to take strict action against the criminals, their associates, and those who provide them protection,” a Nuh police spokesperson said. PTI COR SMV SMV SHS SHS
