PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A nurse who was critically injured in a patient attack at Rhode Island Hospital in 2023 has reached a settlement with the hospital’s security company, according to his lawyer.
Scott Amaral accused Allied Universal of negligence in hiring, training and assigning the security guards who were on duty the day of the assault.
Amaral’s lawyer said the two parties settled after opening statements, during which a video of the assault was shown.
Amaral said he hopes the case leads to reforms aimed at improving safety in health care settings.
The attack left Amaral in critical but stable condition in September 2023.
According to a police report, the patient was upset over his phone privileges when Amaral entered his room to check on him.
Police later reviewed hospital security footage of the assault.
