OCALA, Fla. – An Ocala teenager ended up in the hospital after he and two other teens filmed a TikTok video of themselves getting a haircut on a median on Southwest College Road Sunday night.
According to Ocala police, as the teens were recording near the Raising Cane’s restaurant, a truck and SUV slammed into each other and plowed into the median, hitting the teen.
What witnesses say happened
Yaj Lerom was at the crash site and described the moment he learned what the teens had been doing there.
“I got goosebumps and I got them again. I get it every time I talk about it because it’s, being a content creator, I don’t want to sound hypocritical because I’m in some crazy places, but I’m not putting myself out there,” Lerom said. “My thing was, young kids, something needs to be done. These accounts that are doing that need to be banned. They shouldn’t even be seeing these videos.”
Two of the teens who were at the scene described what they remembered from the crash.
“Pancakes and flapjacks, flying, it’s not even funny, flying, and then I came over there to sit down after the crash, and then I see my friend laying down the street,” one teen said.
What police found — and what remains unclear
Ocala police officers said there were no signs of impairment for either driver. However, it remains unclear whether the drivers were distracted by the teens at the time of the crash.
Officers added that whether it is a trend or a stunt, they do not encourage anyone to put themselves in danger to create content.
Filming a video on a public median is not against the law, so the teens are not facing charges.
Southwest College Road, where the crash happened, is a heavily traveled road. Lerom put it plainly.
“This road is very, very busy and definitely not the place. It’s common sense, but some people don’t gain common sense till later in life,” he said.
