The arrest of a suspected child predator in Vancouver turned into an animal rescue mission Wednesday after officers found several cats living in hazardous conditions inside the suspect’s home.

Maurice Holmes was booked into the Clark County Jail on three counts of possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct, and dealing in depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Vancouver Police is referring Holmes also be charged with more than ten counts of first-degree animal cruelty.

According to police, officers wore gas masks and Tyvek suits when entering the home because of the unsafe environment. Officers reported finding at least ten dead cats inside the house.

Clark County Animal Control helped rescue several cats from the home.

The Humae Society of Southwest Washington is reporting a cat emergency, as they have dozens of felines that need forever homes.

The shelter is waiving adoption fees through the weekend to help get some of the cats and kittens adopted.
