LA CROSSE (WKBT) — State officials are warning residents of a ‘viral’ property tax scam targeting seniors.
According to a release, an AI-generated video falsely claiming Congress created a program to freeze or reduce senior property taxes is directing viewers to contact their county assessor for a ‘Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request’ or an ‘IRS Form 1098-SR’. Neither exists, officials say.
“Never share personal or financial information in response to unsolicited calls, texts, emails, or online links,” the release states.
To prevent falling victim to scams like this, officials urge residents to question and investigate videos before believing them. They also say to never share personal details through any means, including over the phone, via text or through unverified online links.
If you encounter a scam, report it directly to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). Call Wisconsin’s Consumer Protection Hotline at (800) 422-7128 with questions or if you have lost money or control of your identity to a scam.
