WASHINGTON (TNND) — A coalition of major tech and cybersecurity organizations, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, is warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks could become more widespread and sophisticated within months.
In an open letter signed by those companies and more than 100 other organizations, the group said hospitals, water treatment plants, power systems, internet infrastructure, and other critical services are particularly at risk.
The initiative argues that AI is making advanced hacking capabilities faster, cheaper and more accessible, allowing attackers to exploit weaknesses with less time and expertise. It pointed to persistent vulnerabilities that can leave organizations exposed, including unpatched or outdated software, excessive system permissions, weak authentication, misconfigurations and legacy technology.
A recent CrowdStrike report found AI-enabled attacks increased 89% in 2025 compared with the previous year.
The letter calls on companies and governments to treat cybersecurity as an urgent priority as AI makes it easier for criminals and hostile groups to find and exploit digital weaknesses.
It urges organizations to fix their most serious security gaps and demand stronger safeguards in the software and AI-generated code they use. Cybersecurity and technology companies are also being asked to constantly test their defenses, share information about emerging threats and develop AI tools that can help protect hospitals, utilities, transportation systems and other critical services.
For the public, stronger defenses could help reduce the risk of data breaches, ransomware attacks and disruptions to essential services people rely on every day. The letter also asks leading AI companies to make advanced response tools, funding and expert support available to defenders during major cyberattacks.
The appeal is voluntary, however, and does not set binding requirements, deadlines or specific funding commitments.
