As students head back to school, it’s important for everyone — parents, children and drivers — to focus on safety.
If you are a parent, start by making sure your child knows the safest route to their school. Practice walking the route with them, pointing out crosswalks and safe places to cross streets. Remind them to always use marked crosswalks, and to stop, look and listen for traffic before crossing the street, even if they have the right of way. Children should understand that drivers may not always see them and stop, so staying alert is essential.
If your child rides a bike, safety starts with wearing a properly fitted helmet every time they ride. They should stay on bike paths or sidewalks whenever possible, follow traffic rules and never assume a driver sees them. Wearing bright clothing and using reflectors will help increase their visibility.
If you are a motorist, please be extra cautious as traffic increases around schools during drop-off and pick-up times. Stay off your phone and eliminate distractions that could take your eyes off the road. Children may unexpectedly step into the street or cross outside of crosswalks, so be prepared to stop suddenly.
Always obey school zone speed limits and be aware that they may change depending on the time of day. These zones are in place for a reason — to protect children when they are most at risk. Finally, remember that state law requires all drivers to stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus; doing so puts lives in danger and carries significant legal penalties.
By working together and staying alert, we can ensure all students make it to and from school safely. A few extra moments and heightened awareness can make all the difference.
