The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a scammer who has stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars through cashier’s checks delivered to a UPS store in Old Town.
On Sept. 8, APD was notified that an elderly woman was scammed out of $93,000. The victim, who is from Springfield, Mo., was contacted by a person pretending to be with the “Office of the Inspector General, Cyber Crimes Division,” according to a recently unsealed search warrant affidavit.
“The individual convinced the victim that her Social Security Number (SSN) had been compromised and was being used to purchase illegal narcotics,” APD said in the affidavit. “They went on to offer to help the victim obtain a new SSN if the victim sent them $131,500 in two separate cashier’s checks.”
One check for $93,000 was sent to the UPS Store at 107 S. West Street in Old Town. The check was made out to Vertex Building LLC.
APD then found that seven other victims from across the country sent a total of $819,170 to the UPS Store between Aug. 5 and Aug. 24, 2026.
No arrest has been made.
