A police constable attached to Thattarmadam police station in Thoothukudi district was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly hacking a woman to death on Tuesday.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Priya, 39 of Mudivaithanendal, who was running a computer centre in the area. She was allegedly hacked to death by police constable Muthukumar, 32 of her same village.

The police said the deceased’s elder sister was acquainted with Muthukumar and he had taken around 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery from her and pledged it. He had allegedly been delaying returning the jewellery. Priya had repeatedly asked her sister to get the jewellery back and had also asked Muthukumar to return it.

This reportedly angered Muthukumar, who picked quarrel with Priya when she was at the computer centre. As the argument escalated, he allegedly took out a sharp weapon that he had concealed and hacked Priya to death before fleeing the scene.

On receiving the information, Pudukottai police rushed to the spot, recovered Priya’s body and sent it to Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital for post mortem examination.

The police registered a case and arrested Muthukumar on Wednesday. Muthukumar, who had been working at Thattarmadam police station, had reportedly been absent from duty since August 28.
