Speaking about the recent Internet Crime Complaint Center report published by the FBI, Vermani said the agency recorded losses worth $16.6 billion last year from cybercrime. Ransomware continues to be the most prevalent issue, and senior citizens being the most financially impacted demographic.

“In the past few years, the FBI, working with our partners, have had a number of successes, operations and disruptions. The LockBit one was a perfect example of that with the FBI working with nine other countries, partners in those countries, to go after the main actors, file charges,” Virmani said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSAC Conference 2025, Virmani also discussed:

  • The evolving cyberthreat landscape;
  • The need for a proactive public-private partnership;
  • FBI’s focus areas in San Francisco.

Prior to his current position, Virmani was assigned to FBI headquarters as Assistant Section Chief of the Counterterrorism Internet Operations Section and also as Unit Chief of the Cyberterrorism Unit, which is focused on identifying, obtaining intelligence on and disrupting cyberterrorists and their networks globally.
