Commissioner of Police, Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Lagos, Mrs Ronke Okunade, has charged officers on how to tackle criminals by applying professionalism: “My vision is to tackle the cybercrime, internet fraud, and the challenges of police investigators.
“It is to ensure that this unit is repositioned to continue actualise its mandate of investigating and prosecuting serious and complex cases of fraud. Officers should uphold the highest standard of conduct in their interaction with members of the public.
“Civility and respect are non-negotiable traits for effective policing and public trust. We underscore the importance of respecting and protecting fundamental human rights as enshrined in chapter IV of the Constitution. Officers are reminded on the need to ascertain the condition of suspect before and after detention in line with the provision of Section 8 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 as safeguarding these rights is sacrosanct to building public trust.
“Officers should turn out properly dressed in their designated uniforms to reflect the regiment standard of the Nigeria Police Force. Appearance is a key element of discipline in law enforcement. Dress code will also be used to hold officers accountable, enhance discipline and foster public trust.
“At PSFU, we teach officers modus operadi of police investigations. We are building human capacity and training of PSFU personnel. I have reminded officers of their commitment to professionalism, zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of human rights. Officers should always operate within the ambit of relevance.
“We conduct investigation excellently in PSFU. We have handled a lot of profile cases with good results. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, warned officers to be disciplined, professional and respect the fundamental righs of members of the public.
“Officers should conduct themselves with decorum and alertness. They are advised to take community policing with the seriousness it deserves.”
