A 35-year-old Queens man has been arrested in connection with an alleged elder scam that authorities say defrauded a 73-year-old Baldwin man out of $40,000.
According to Nassau County police, the victim received a phone call at about 4 p.m. on June 25 from someone claiming his bank account and Social Security number had been compromised. The caller instructed the victim to withdraw his money from the bank to protect his funds.
Police said the victim withdrew $40,000 and later met an unknown man in a parking lot on Grand Avenue, where he handed over the cash. A short time later, the victim realized he had been scammed and contacted police.
Following an investigation, detectives arrested Junkai Chen, 35, of Fresh Meadows, Queens.
Chen is charged with third-degree grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, July 29, in First District Court in Hempstead.
Nassau County police are urging residents to remain vigilant against scams targeting older adults and to warn vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential fraud schemes.
