(TNS) — Radford City Public Schools on Tuesday disclosed a “cybersecurity incident” affecting portions of the division’s computer network.
Superintendent Adam Joyce sent an update to families of students via email.
“As soon as we became aware of the situation, we immediately activated our security protocols, enlisted the support of top cybersecurity experts, and began working closely with state and federal law enforcement to investigate the source and scope of the issue,” Joyce wrote in the notification.
“We are grateful that this occurred during summer break when schools are closed and summer school classroom learning is not impacted,” Joyce continued. “This timing gives us space to focus fully on our response and ensure our systems are safe and secure well before the bulk of our students and staff return.”
The superintendent said all safety-related systems, such as security cameras, doors and phone lines, remain fully operational. But other internal systems are affected while a restoration process is underway.
Joyce said the division would be sharing further updates as the situation develops and “when we have new and meaningful information.”
Radford City Schools had 3,333 in the 2024-25 school year. Joyce made no mention in his statement of whether the personal data of students or staff was exposed in the incident. Other school divisions and businesses in the region, including The Roanoke Times, have been hit by cyber attacks in recent months and years.
