Infosecurity Magazine reports that automotive manufacturers have been subjected to a more than twofold increase in ransomware incidence between 2024 and 2025.Accelerated connected technology implementation, increased cloud service dependence, and an expanding third-party supplier network among automakers have fueled escalated ransomware intrusions against the sector, according to a Halcyon report. Aside from having a sprawling attack surface stemming from over-the-air updates and suppliers’ insecure IT systems, automakers were also regarded as attractive ransomware targets due to their low downtime tolerance, which has been evident in the breach of Jaguar Land Rover last year, which has been noted to be the most expensive ransomware attack yet. Automotive IT teams have been urged to not only remediate perimeter and edge devices and launch phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication but also reinforce their endpoint detection and response tools, manage immutable offline data backups, create baseline supplier security requirements, and adopt a sophisticated ransomware detection tool.”Given these escalating threats, companies across the automotive supply chain should prioritize understanding their exposure, strengthening their defenses, and ensuring they are prepared to respond when an attack occurs,” said Halcyon.
