Ineffective security integration and tool overload are creating blind spots for attackers to exploit.
Ransomware gangs are increasingly targeting the same organizations multiple times, with 31% of victims suffering more than one attack in the past year.
According to new research from Barracuda Networks, 57% of surveyed organisations had been hit by ransomware, with a third of all victims (32%) paying the ransom — a figure that climbs to 37% for those attacked multiple times — but 41% of those who paid failed to recover all of their data.
The study also found that ineffective security integration and tool overload are creating blind spots for attackers to exploit, with 74% of repeat victims reporting they manage too many security tools, and 61% admitting their tools don’t integrate effectively.
This is often due to faulty or incomplete decryption tools provided by attackers, reinforcing the importance of secure and regularly updated data backups.
Neal Bradbury, chief product officer at Barracuda, said: “In many cases attackers can move through victims’ networks, gaining access to devices, data and more without being detected and blocked.
“Too many victims are juggling an unmanageable number of disconnected tools, often introduced with the best intentions to strengthen protection. Tools that can’t work together, or which are not configured correctly, create security gaps and lead to breaches. A unified approach to security centred on a strong integrated platform is vital.”
