LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is calling on families and drivers to review safety practices as more than 280,000 Clark County students return to school Monday.
Walking and biking to school
The Red Cross said the trip to and from school is one of the first safety lessons of the year. Parents are urged to walk the route with younger children before the first day, pointing out the safest places to cross streets and where to wait for the bus.
Students who ride bikes should wear a properly fitted helmet, the agency said. Older students walking or biking should stay alert and, if listening to music, keep one earbud out to hear traffic and school buses.

Driver safety in school zones
Drivers are being urged to slow down in school zones, watch for children in crosswalks, and put phones away.
Last school year, Clark County students were involved in 427 crashes going to and from school — four of them fatal. A new Nevada law that took effect July 1 doubles penalties for traffic violations in school zones.
Emergency preparedness
The Red Cross also wants parents to review their child’s school emergency procedures, update emergency contacts, and create a household emergency plan so everyone knows who to contact, where to meet, and how to communicate if something happens during the school day.
