LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Nevada seniors are among the most vulnerable in the country to being scammed, according to new research that ranks the state No. 2 nationwide for seniors at risk.
The report from Retirement Living, an online resource for seniors, found that scammers are using a range of tactics beyond traditional phone calls, with different approaches often aimed at different age groups.
Retirement Living’s research team analyzed data from the FBI and Federal Trade Commission to identify how and where seniors are being targeted.
In Nevada, the median loss per scam increases sharply with age, according to the report. Victims ages 60 to 69 lose a median of $250 per scam. That median rises to $648 for victims ages 70 to 79, and to $5,000 for victims 80 and older.
The report also found that overall senior fraud losses in Nevada grew 42% year-over-year. Nationally, senior fraud losses grew at a faster pace of 57%.
Nevada was not the only Western state to rank high. Arizona was ranked No. 1, while California ranked No. 4 and Washington ranked No. 6, placing all three among the top 10 riskiest states for senior scams.
The research suggests the way scammers reach seniors can vary by age. Nationwide, adults ages 60 to 69 are most often targeted through social media (27%) and websites or apps (24%). Seniors 80 and older are most likely to be reached by phone call (29%), according to the report.
