Online scams, including phishing, emerged as the most prevalent form of cybercrime reported across Africa in 2025, accounting for 17 per cent of all incidents.
A breakdown of reported cases reveals a diverse array of digital threats impacting the continent. Following online scams, both interpersonal online harassment and financial crimes tied for the second-largest share, each representing 14 per cent of reported incidents.
These categories encompass sextortion, revenge porn, cyberbullying, and harassment, alongside identity theft and financial fraud.
Data breaches accounted for 11 per cent of reported cases, while Business Email Compromise (BEC)—defined as email scams specifically targeting businesses to steal money or information—made up 10 per cent of the total cybercrime landscape.
Ransomware and banking trojan stealers comprised 7 per cent of cases, followed closely by cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure at 6 per cent. Illicit marketplaces and online human trafficking accounted for 5 per cent of reported incidents.
Rounding out the list, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks—which overwhelm websites or online services to cause outages—and cryptojacking each accounted for 4 per cent of all reported cybercrime cases.
