The FBI is investigating reports of a cybersecurity breach that may have exposed millions of driver’s license scans, according to media reports.
WASHINGTON — Millions of scans of driver’s licenses may have been exposed in an alleged cybersecurity breach of an ID verification company, according to several media reports.
The FBI said it was “looking into the incident,” but the agency declined to provide additional details, citing an ongoing investigation, according to the New York Times.
The breach reportedly happened at IDScan, a New Orleans-based company whose technology is used by businesses to scan and authenticate government-issued IDs.
Independent journalist Brian Krebs published a report Tuesday alleging he found site on the “dark web” that was apparently selling millions of digital scans.
Krebs said he saw more than 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses advertised, along with more than 100 million other identification cards, more than 3 million travel documents or international IDs, and at least 579,000 medical cards on the Russian cybercrime forum Exploit, as reported by WWL.
Some records included multiple images of the front and back of a license, as well as infrared and ultraviolet scans and timestamps showing when the documents were scanned.
Krebs claimed was able to verify the personal information up for sale on the website with at least nine people.
The website reportedly included an entry for U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, which featured an alleged copy of a Minnesota driver’s license with his name and photo, according to NBC News.
A Pentagon spokesperson said in an email to NBC News that “the Department is aware of these reports and is evaluating them.”
An advertisement on the site boasted that roughly 500,000 documents were being added daily.
The extent of the alleged breach remains unclear, as the investigation is ongoing.
