School administrators and safety teams have access to a new, free tool designed to help evaluate security protocols without requiring immediate budget expenditures.
Bolo Stick, a safety barricade manufacturer founded by retired law enforcement veteran Bill Barna, published a one-page printable checklist centered on foundational safety assessments. Barna, who spent 33 years as an officer, police academy instructor and substitute teacher, created the resource to encourage a layered strategy toward emergency preparedness.
The assessment asks administrators to evaluate critical operational areas, including whether exterior doors remain propped open during class hours, whether teachers can lock classroom doors from the inside without entering hallways and whether emergency communication and lockdown protocols are drilled regularly. Additionally, the checklist prompts districts to review joint facility walkthroughs with local police and fire personnel and confirm the presence of threat assessment teams.
Rather than relying on a single security mechanism, the evaluation emphasizes that multiple procedural layers buy critical time for first responders during an active emergency. Each question on the printable sheet provides space to designate responsibility and set completion targets for identified gaps.
The downloadable resource is available online without requiring registration or user information.
