RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Trinity Episcopal School is cooperating with a Richmond Police Department investigation into allegations of cyberbullying and sexual misconduct involving students.
Richmond Police said they received a call about a possible criminal incident at the school on Sept. 21. Two days later, on Sept. 23, an RPD investigator was on campus meeting with school administrators.
School officials addressed the situation in an email to parents on Wednesday, saying, “Last week, the school received reports of alleged cyber bullying and the unauthorized taking and sharing of images of students accompanied by derogatory and harmful comments. We have also heard of allegations of potential off-campus criminal sexual misconduct.”
The email said that because a police investigation was underway before school leadership learned of the allegations, the school had to proceed with caution to avoid sharing information or taking action that could harm students or compromise the investigation.
The email said a group of boys was required to stay off campus last week while the school looked into the allegations.
Some of them returned to school on Thursday, Sept. 29. A few others will continue learning remotely.
The email also said the school will not condone retaliation or other acts meant to intimidate students or make them feel unsafe or disrespected, and asked students or parents who become aware of such a situation to contact school leadership immediately.
Looking ahead, school officials said, “Our goals are to ensure the near-term safety and wellbeing of our students while taking steps to evaluate and, as appropriate, enhance our policies and procedures moving forward.”
In the email sent to families, administrators outlined immediate security changes.
The school is banning student cell phone use during classes, bringing in outside grief and trauma counselors, and hiring an independent investigator to review potential policy violations.
The email also said the school will continue to provide access to individual school counselors.
RPD says it has no updates in the investigation, adding only that it continues.
