As concerns about children’s safety online continue to mount, Roblox, one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms, is asking users to verify their age with a government-issued ID or AI-powered face scanning technology if they want to use the platforms’ features. About 130 million people around the world log into Roblox each day, according to the company.
Beginning this week, users seeking access to Roblox’s full range of features will be asked to verify their age through one of those methods. The system will then place users into age-based categories that determine what games they can access and whether they can use certain chat features. TODAY’s chief consumer investigative correspondent Vicky Nguyen got an exclusive look at the technology at Roblox’s California headquarters.
The changes come as Roblox faces increasing scrutiny over child safety and a growing number of lawsuits alleging that children were exposed to predatory behavior on the platform. More than 150 families have filed lawsuits against the company, while several states are investigating or pursuing legal action over child safety concerns. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, whose office has investigated the platform, has said that “Roblox has become a predator’s playground.”
Nguyen also spoke with 12-year-old Roblox user Margot Carroll. “I’ve never experienced any of that, but I do know, like stories of people getting reached out (to) by, like, older men and stuff,” she said.
Company officials say the new safeguards are part of an ongoing effort to create a safer experience for younger users.
“We want the platform to be safe, because you can’t have fun and play if you’re not safe in the first place,” said Eliza Jacobs, Roblox’s vice president of safety product policy. Jacobs said the work is ongoing, adding, “There is no end date when it comes to safety.”
CORRECTION (June 15, 2026, 6:08 p.m.): An earlier version of this article misstated when Roblox’s age verification technology was rolled out. The technology was released earlier this year. Starting this week, users will have to verify their age to access age-based games and chat features.
