Rockstar told ‘pay or leak’ as GTA 6 developer is hacked once again | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker

The GTA 6 maker has until April 14, 2026 to pay the ransom, otherwise the hackers have threatened to release the leaked information.

Rockstar Games continues its unlucky streak as it appears to have once again fallen victim to a hacking cyber attack.

The studio currently developer Grand Theft Auto 6 confirmed that the hack had taken place in a statement issued to IGN.

In the statement, Rockstar explains that the hackers were able to obtain ‘a limited amount of non-material company information’. However, it also clarified that the attack won’t affect either their organization or their players.

According to The CyberSec Guru, the hack was reportedly carried out by a group known as ShinyHunters. The information was apparently accessed by using a trojan horse operation to gain access to Andot, an internal monitoring tool that Rockstar utilises at its studio.

After gaining access to company data, ShinyHunters issued the developer with a statement of its own. It reads:

“Rockstar Games

“Your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak.

“This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak along with several annoying (digital) problems that’ll come your way. Make the right decision. Don’t be the next headline.

“FINAL WARNING PAY OR LEAK.”

The hacking group has given Rockstar Games until tomorrow to pay the ransom. Otherwise, ShinyHunters is threatening to leak the data to the public.

It’s currently unclear how high the ransom has been set, or what sort of data the group has access to.

However, given that Rockstar’s statement clarifies that the leaked information is ‘non-material’, it doesn’t suggest that any information pertaining to the development of GTA 6 has escaped the developer’s walls.

If true, this would make the hack a much less damaging attack than the one the company suffered back in 2022. Back then, a huge number of early gameplay videos and screenshots of GTA 6 made their way into the public domain – this was before the game was even officially revealed or even acknowledged to be in existence by Rockstar and Take-Two.

GTA 6 also had its reveal trailer leaked ahead of the official reveal in December 2023. The studio went ahead and published the trailer early, although it wasn’t happy about it at the time.

Gamers are expecting to hear more about GTA 6 in the coming months as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously promised the marketing machine would start to spin up around summer.

Rockstar has scheduled Grand Theft Auto 6 for a release on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There’s currently no word on when the game will come to PC.
