Here’s a Rowing Hack we spotted in the Team USA tent at Worlds in Amsterdam this summer. It is a pretty clever way to create a way for your athletes to stow their gear while they are out racing. Meet the Team Tent Stuff Suspender.
Will Daly, Team Manager and USRowing Director of High Performance Operations, came up with this idea for a way to repurpose some paracord and cheap carabiners into a wall of storage along the side of the team tent.
All he had to do was tie a few loops in the line about two feet apart, snap a carabiner on each loop, and then tie one end to the crossbar of the tent. From there, the weight of the carabiners and–eventually–the bags, kept everything hanging straight down. The loops and carabiners
Will’s hack is easy to set up, easy to travel with, and does the most important job of all: keeping bags and gear off the ground so there is space in the team tent for, well, the team.
Every time the athletes showed up through the week, they could snap their stuff onto an open carabiner, and the system kept each bag in plain view so it was easy to find your own gear when it was time to head back to the bus.
This hack will work just as well with smaller pop-up tents like we see at most weekend regattas, and one added bonus? The bags will help anchor the tent if it gets windy while the team is on the water.
This trick definitely improves on the Boat Strap Gear Hanging Hack we looked at a few years back and–given that the set up can be taken down rolled up into a small ball–it is even easier to travel with than the Portable Gear Racks we see all over the place nowadays.
The Stuff Suspender is also scalable: just add an extra line and a few more carabiners if you have a bigger team traveling with you on a given trip. Instead of having to bring a big gear rack for every regatta, you can just set up as many lines as might need each time.
No tent? No problem. This hack can work just as well suspended from a trailer rack or even the light bar, all while keeping gear out of the bottom of the trailer and off the ground, where it might be in the way.
