Rukmini Vasanth deepfake case: Actor files cybercrime complaint over viral AI visuals | #cybercrime | #infosec

Actor Rukmini Vasanth has filed a cybercrime complaint after AI-generated bikini photos linked to her went viral online. She said the circulating visuals were fabricated and not real, and called for strict action against the misuse of technology.

Rukmini said a formal complaint has been submitted to the Cyber Crime department and added that she has full faith that the matter will be investigated thoroughly. She also said such incidents do not affect only female actors, but many girls and women across the country, even as she noted that AI also has many positives.

Complaint filed with Cyber Crime department

“We have just filed the complaint. So I have full faith, and I’m sure our Cyber Crime department will look into it. This doesn’t happen only to actresses, many girls and women face this issue. It is wrong. I don’t think it is something that should be done. It may happen to actresses first, but I think many women face such problems. People should think about it. AI has a lot of positives too,” the actor said.

What the viral visuals showed

The viral visuals showed a woman stepping into a swimming pool in a green bikini during what appeared to be a professional photoshoot setup. The clips spread quickly across social media, sparking online discussion and leading many users to believe that the footage was authentic.

Statement on deepfake images

On May 23, Rukmini addressed the issue in a statement, clarifying that the images were fabricated and warned of legal action. She distanced herself from the viral pictures and said the circulating content had no connection to her.

“My team and I have come across certain AI-generated images being circulated online claiming to be me. I want to state clearly that these images are entirely fake and fabricated. The creation and circulation of such manipulated content is deeply irresponsible and a serious violation of privacy. We are taking this matter seriously and initiating the necessary legal and cybercrime action against those involved in creating and spreading these images. Requesting everyone to refrain from sharing or engaging with such content (sic),” her statement read.

Meanwhile, on the work front, the actor, who was last seen in Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, will next be seen in Toxic alongside Yash and Dragon with Jr NTR.
