The disgraced comedian faces a “significant” prison term after being found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, 5 November).Brand has been largely absent from British television screens since his appearance on Comedy Central’s Roast Battle. The programme, presented by Jimmy Carr, featured comedians competing to ‘roast’ one another.Brand was signed on as a judge in 2018 but lasted just one series after fellow comedian Katherine Ryan reportedly raised allegations that he had sexually assaulted women. Deadline reports that sources close to Fulwell 73, the production company behind the programme, stated that Katherine confronted Brand during filming, though this was left out of the final cut.Katherine has previously discussed challenging an unnamed colleague on Roast Battle. Speaking on the BBC series Louis Theroux Interviews, she said: “I – in front of loads of people, in the format of the show – said to this person’s face that they are a predator.”The 43 year old comedian told Louis she refrained from naming her colleague because it was a “litigious minefield” and she had not personally been assaulted by him. One insider claimed that Brand was “absolutely furious” about being targeted by Ryan, while other sources suggested he insisted producers shield him from being roasted by other comedians, reports the Daily Star.Katherine Ryan reportedly ‘roasted’ Brand on a television set(Image: Comedy Central)Regarding the decision to remove Brand from the second series, a source revealed: “Contract negotiations were made as tricky as possible, is the best way to put it. In the end, it came down to the fact that it seemed like Russell didn’t have a good sense of humour. He didn’t feel he was fair game.”Roast Battle proved to be Brand’s final notable recurring television role in the UK. While he did make an appearance on Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off in 2019, further bookings have been few and far between.Allegations surrounding Brand’s conduct first surfaced in the media in September 2023, when The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches programme jointly reported that four women had accused him of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse.Following the initial reports, police launched investigations into further allegations against Brand. As more women came forward, the charges mounted, and by the time his trial commenced on October 14 of this year, he faced seven charges in total.Russell and Laura Brand(Image: Getty Images)He was acquitted of two counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault, but was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. In the wake of his conviction, police confirmed they are now investigating two additional rape allegations against the father-of-three, urging any further potential victims to come forward.Det Supt Andy Furphy, from the Metropolitan Police, stated his belief that more women will now feel compelled to speak out. He said: “I think it’s likely – potentially – that other women will come forward. They’ll probably gain some courage and some confidence from what’s happened in the courtroom over the last two weeks.”A spokesperson for Katherine has been approached for comment. Brand is due to be sentenced on Monday (9 November).Ensure our latest celebrity headlines always appear at the top of your Google Search by making us a Preferred Source.
