SAPS and GQ security company make big drug bust

A “routine response” by an Atlas Security armed response officer to a burglary activation at a storage facility in Cotswold, Gqeberha, has led to a major drug find estimated at around R2 million.

In a statement, the security company said an armed response officer rushed to the scene on Wednesday night after their control room received a burglary signal at a property on Woodpecker Street.

According to the statement, the armed response officer noticed that the lock to a storage unit was removed and as he began to check the unit, he encountered a suspect.

“Upon engagement, the suspect pleaded with the armed response officer not to enter, attempting to discourage further inspection.”

He called for “back-up” and a second armed response officer arrived and secured the exit point.

“It was then that the security officer observed the suspect attempting to conceal items in a corner, near a red vehicle parked in front of the unit. “On closer inspection, the items appeared to be packets of drugs.”

The Atlas Security statement said that when confronted, the suspect attempted to flee in his vehicle, but the entrance was blocked by the other security officer.

He then abandoned the car and fled on foot, jumping over the boundary wall towards the freeway and in the direction of Newton Park.

“Additional support units, and further response teams, were immediately deployed to search the surrounding area.

According to a police statement, SAPS members on patrol in the area were flagged down by a private security company who had searched a male foreign national and allegedly found drugs in his possession.

Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the “suspect had reportedly been at a storage locker when his suspicious behaviour triggered an alarm, prompting a response from the security company.”

She said police proceeded to search the storage locker as well as the discarded bag.

She said the following items were confiscated:

– 217 grams of crack cocaine

– 889.5 grams of crystal methamphetamine

– 303 kilograms of compressed dagga

– A red Mini Cooper, which was impounded

“The estimated street value of the confiscated drugs is approximately R2 million.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing to locate the suspect,” Gantana said.
