A school has been forced to close after suffering a ransomware attack.

St Anne’s Catholic School in Southampton was forced to close for four days after the cyber attack.

The National Cyber Security Centre and Information Commissioner’s Office were informed and have been assisting the school.

In a post on Facebook, the school described it as an “IT failure”, and announced it would be closed from Monday.

A Year 8 parents’ evening and school concert had to be cancelled, but school trips planned for Thursday went ahead as planned.

Headteacher Julian Waterfield said there was no evidence that any data has been compromised.

An NCSC spokesperson said: “We have provided advice and guidance to St Anne’s Catholic School following a cyber incident.”

An ICO spokesperson said: “We can confirm we have received a report from St Anne’s Catholic School and are assessing the information provided.”

The school reopened on Friday for a non-uniform day on the last day before the Easter holidays, where school finished at 12.30pm.

A ransomware attack is when criminals break into a computer system, lock the files, and demand money to unlock them again.
