School safety: Law enforcement urges traffic awareness on Athens, Limestone County roads

With local classes back in session for the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, busy periods of school traffic will once more become part of the weekday bustle as motorists make their rounds in and around Athens.
City officials are reminding residents to be mindful of the increase in vehicle traffic around local schools during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. According to Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell, there are no changes for this school year to school traffic routes for drop-off and pick-up. All routes and procedures will remain the same as they were for 2025-2026.
Pressnell reminds all Athens drivers to slow down and remain extra cautious when traveling in school zones, noting that school zone speed limits will be strictly enforced by the Athens Police Department. Motorists also should keep a vigilant watch for student pedestrians who are walking to school.
“The safety of our students is of the utmost importance,” Pressnell said. “Our goal is to have a safe start to the school year for everyone and to do that we need the community’s cooperation on the roadways.”
Drivers are further urged to exercise heightened caution around school buses, Pressnell noted. Alabama law requires that motorists come to a complete stop when a school bus is stopped with its stop arm extended and lights flashing. Pressnell cautions that it is illegal and dangerous to pass a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children.
Remaining mindful of school traffic isn’t just a concern for urban drivers. The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office also cautions motorists to keep school safety in mind when driving along rural roads.
“Whether you’re driving, walking, biking, or riding the bus, let’s all do our part to keep our schools and roadways safe,” the sheriff’s office said in an online statement. “…Our deputies will be out across the county helping ensure a safe start to the school year. Together, we can make this an incredible year for every student.”
