A security guard was wounded following an armed robbery in Korsten in Gqeberha on Friday.
The Hawks said a heavily armed gang opened fire on the security guards from a cash solutions company during the brazen incident in the morning.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said approximately seven suspects were involved.
He said the gang fled the scene with a large amount of cash.
A manhunt is underway for the suspects.
The robbery occurred on the same day that the acting police minister, Firoz Cachalia, announced fourth-quarter crime statistics.
He said Gauteng, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal continue to contribute the largest share of serious and organised crimes.
Gauteng remains the epicentre of several forms of violent organised crime:
- It accounts for 57.1% of all carjackings in the country.
- 54.8% of all kidnappings.
- And 48.4% of all cash?in?transit robberies.
“These are not opportunistic crimes. They are the work of organised criminal syndicates that are highly mobile, heavily armed, and deeply embedded in our economic centres,” said Cachalia
#sapsHQ The #CrimeStats also reveals notable provincial disparities and stubborn hotspots. Gauteng, the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal recorded over 80% of all murders in South Africa.
