Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand cracks down on AI scams against seniors
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand took several actions toward scrutinizing the role that AI plays in scams against senior citizens.
On Wednesday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand hosted a Senate Aging Committee hearing to examine the role that AI plays in scams, especially those involving companion chatbots.
The senator said on Thursday that she also sent letters to nine of the nation’s leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Meta and X.
Gillibrand said that in these letters, she asked for clarification on how they safeguard older adults from being scammed by companion chatbots. However, she argued for a more permanent solution.
“I expect these companies to respond promptly and fully. That letter is a first step, but it cannot be the last. We need a bipartisan framework to govern AI and thinking about how to develop this framework,” Gillibrand said.
Gillibrand said in that spirit, she’s also introduced two new bipartisan bills to help confront the scams, known as the National Strategy for Combating Scams Act, or the Guard Act.
If passed, these bills would give both law enforcement and federal agencies tools to protect consumers from fraud.
