Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin, who returned as CEO of key affiliate E-Mart after 13 years, has launched a major overhaul of the group’s control tower, the Management Strategy Office.

The group has replaced key executives in the office and created a new planning division to strengthen its role in developing strategies for new businesses. The vacant president-level post of head of the Management Strategy Office will remain unfilled for now, with the office operating directly under Chung.

Shinsegae has also strengthened information security teams at major affiliates, including Starbucks Korea (SCK Company), in what is seen as a response to a recent rise in security incidents, including customer data leaks.

According to industry sources on the 23rd, Shinsegae Group carried out its regular executive appointments for fiscal year 2027 on that day and simultaneously decided to push forward an organizational restructuring plan centered on these changes.

First, a new planning division position will be established within the Management Strategy Office. Under this division, a Planning Team and a Business Strategy Team will be set up, expected to support large-scale new business promotion strategies led by Chung.

The Audit Team, previously directly under Gyeong Yeong-jeon-ryak (Head), will be transferred to an organization under the General Management Support Division. The Planning and Strategy Headquarters of the E-Mart division will be merged into the Management Strategy Office, with its functions transferred to individual companies. Organizations under the External Cooperation Headquarters will be reorganized into a Public Relations Team and a CR (Customer Relations) Team.

The management team of the Management Strategy Office will also be refreshed with new faces. Choi Taek-won, CEO of SSG.com, has been appointed as the head of General Management Support, which oversees group personnel and audit functions. Park Seung-hak, Head of the Leisure Business Division at Chosun Hotel & Resort, has been selected to lead the External Cooperation Headquarters, responsible for public relations and government affairs. Jeon Sang-jin, Senior Vice President in charge of General Management, will remain in his position, taking on a central role in the Strategy Office while overseeing overall operations.

Interpretations also suggest that this restructuring of the Strategy Office aims to slim down the organization by reducing the number of executives while strengthening the direct command structure of Chung Yong-jin, who has effectively been handling strategy planning duties since April and leading the promotion of major new business initiatives.

Another feature of this organizational restructuring is the establishment or strengthening of information security organizations at key affiliates. SCK Korea established a new Digital Division and an Information Security Center.

E-Mart24 also created a new Information Security Center. E-Mart and Chosun Hotel & Resort changed their information security division organizations to Information Security Centers, and SSG.com converted its CSO (Chief Security Officer) division into an Information Security Center organization.

Shinsegae Construction will change the Starfield Cheongna development project promotion organization from a three-division structure to an integrated division to accelerate business execution speed.
