Six Ghanaians were among 79 people arrested in Zambia during a joint operation targeting a facility suspected of involvement in organised cybercrime activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
The six Ghanaians were arrested in Lusaka on August 23, 2026, alongside 10 Zambians and 63 other foreign nationals, according to a travel advisory issued by the Ministry on October 5.
The operation was conducted by the Zambia Police Service, the Drug Enforcement Commission and the Department of Immigration.
The Ministry, in a statement on Monday, October 5, 2026, said some of the Ghanaians had allegedly been lured to Zambia through fraudulent employment opportunities before being forced into online scam activities.
“Some individuals had been recruited through purported legitimate employment opportunities, including online data-entry positions, but were subsequently forced into online scam activities after their passports were confiscated by their employers,” the Ministry said.
It said the development highlighted the use of fraudulent job opportunities by human trafficking syndicates to lure unsuspecting job seekers into illicit activities.
The Ministry has consequently advised Ghanaians travelling to or seeking employment in Zambia to exercise extreme caution and thoroughly verify the authenticity of employment offers, recruitment agencies and prospective employers before travelling.
It also urged Ghanaians living in Zambia to remain vigilant when responding to online employment opportunities and maintain regular contact with the Ghana High Commission in Lusaka for consular assistance when necessary.
The Ministry said the advisory was part of the government’s efforts to safeguard the welfare and interests of Ghanaians travelling to or residing abroad.
