SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – With school starting up, the South Bend Fire Department is sharing important safety tips for students and drivers alike.

Derek Erquhart, the department’s assistant chief of fire prevention, joined us on 16 News Now at Noon to highlight key safety practices for the upcoming school year.

Tips for students walking or biking

• Wear bright colors: Choose reflective or light-colored clothing rather than dark outfits so drivers can easily see you.

• Respect school buses: Watch for flashing lights and stopped buses, and refrain from distracted driving.
