St. Joseph County confirms data breach; Iran-backed group claims hacking data | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker

An Iranian-backed hacking group claimed it hacked data tied to St. Joseph County.

An investigation by the county’s IT department found that there was a hack in an external fax server.

The hack was acknowledged in a Reddit post by the group “Handala Hack”, taking credit for the breach.

According to Handala, they have stolen over two terabytes of data from several county organizations, including the prosecutor’s office, health centers and police forces.

According to Fox59/CBS4, they claimed that they have access to thousands of classified documents that are now available to the public.

But the County’s IT department said the targeted server is cloud-based and is not connected to internal services.

They said that anything that was faxed would potentially have been accessed, but assured that information is cached every 20 days.

The hack appeared to be random and motivated by the war in Iran.

Handala Hack is apparently aiming to target smaller local governments.

The department said they’ve isolated the incident and the compromised account, and are continuing to determine exactly what information was accessed.

“We’ve already isolated it and we have isolated the account that was compromised and gathered that went through our systems, did penetration tests and security checks and everything else to make sure nothing else was in our system lurking around” said St Joseph County Chief Information Officer Richard Warfield

They told WSBT 22 there is no ongoing risk to St. Joseph County residents.
