Standard Operating Procedures to control ‘porn’ imagery dissemination issued | #cybercrime | #infosec

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent and control the dissemination of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) content under the IT Rules, 2021. A spokesperson for Digital Technologies and Governance, Himachal Pradesh, said on Tuesday that the NCII content included any material that exposed the private parts of an individual, showed full or partial nudity, depicted sexual acts or involved morphed images of a person. “Such content is a serious violation of privacy and dignity,” he added.

To support the affected individuals, multiple reporting mechanisms had been put in place. Victims, especially women, may approach nearby One Stop Centres for assistance. Complaints could also be submitted directly on social media platforms or websites through their reporting tools, by using the “report/abuse” button or by contacting their designated grievance officers.

Besides, individuals may report such incidents through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in), which also provides an integrated option to report abuse on social media platforms.

The spokesperson said that complaints could be lodged online or by calling the cybercrime helpline number-1930 for immediate assistance. He added that a victim may also file a complaint at the nearest police station or approach law enforcement agencies for necessary legal action.

He said that if no response was received from the intermediary within the prescribed time or if the complainant was not satisfied with the action taken, he may file an appeal before the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) at www.gac.gov.in.

The spokesperson urged citizens to remain vigilant, avoid sharing such harmful content and promptly report any instance of the NCII to ensure timely action and the protection of individual dignity, besides online safety.
