COLUMBUS, Ohio — State officials have announced a new initiative meant to strengthen schools’ cybersecurity, the implementation of a platform known as TechGuard, according to a press release.

What You Need To Know

  • Schools in Ohio will now have access to TechGuard, a platform that offers cybersecurity training
  • Schools are vulnerable targets for cybercriminals
  • State officials announced that this platform is available to schools and Information Technology Centers

The platform offers schools and Information Technology Centers “resources for cybersecurity training and simulated cyberattacks.”

These can range from phishing attempts, ransomware, malware and more.

“Protecting our schools and equipping our teachers with training to help them identify and report cyberattacks helps makes our schools safer and stronger,” said Gov. Mike DeWine said in the release. “I launched CyberOhio as a way to help more schools and businesses fight cyberattacks. These threats continue to evolve over time as technology changes, so we need to remain proactive in training people to spot the warning signs and protect our critical IT systems.”

Schools are targeted by cybercriminals due to their detailed records and “limited cyber defenses,” according to the state. The training offered through this program will help protect students and staff.

“Through this statewide opportunity, we are providing Ohio’s schools with a critical tool to combat the threat of cyberattacks,” said Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen Dackin in the release. “From my years as a school superintendent, I know that protecting our systems from these types of attacks is of paramount importance. I am pleased that we can deliver this support to Ohio’s schools.”
